# Learn Constructing A Pie Chart

## Introduction to learn constructing a pie chart

Apie chart is a pictorial representation of the numerical data by non-intersecting adjacent sectors of the circle such that area of each sector is proportional to the magnitude of the data represented by the sector.

Learn Steps of  constructing of a pie-chart:

• Step I:  First calculate central angle of the for each data given using the following formula,

Central angle of each data =   (value of each data/ total sum of all data values) * 360

• Step II:  Draw a circle of an appropriate radius.
• Step III:  Draw a vertical radius coinciding with the 12 o' clock position of the hands of a clock.
• Step IV:  Choose the largest central angle among all the data available and construct the angle using a protractor
• Step V:  Construct the sector whose one radius coincides with the radius drawn in Step III.
• StepVI:  Construct other sectors representing other data in clockwise direction in an descending order of magnitude of central angle among thedata available.
• Step VII:  Shade the sectors so obtained by different patterns or design and label them.

## Learn constructing a pie chart through examples

1) How John spent \$30 birthday money

 How Games Books Clothes Sweets Amount \$ 5 \$8 \$15 \$2

Construct a pie chart to show the information

Solution:

Step I :    To calculate the central angle for each data

Total amount = Total sum of all data = 30

Central angle for games  =  `[(5)/(30)]*360 = 60`

Central angle for Books =   `[(8)/(30)]*360 = 96`

Central angle for clothes =  `[(15)/(30)]*360 = 180`

Central angle for sweets  =  `[(2)/(30)]*360 = 24`

Step II:  Construct a circle of an appropriate radius.

Step III: Draw a vertical radius

Step IV: Construct the largest central angle using a protractor.  Here, the largest central angle is 180

Step V:  Construct all the other sectors by constructing the central angle

## Learn some more examples of constructing a pie chart

2) A survey of how 40 people go to work

Mode Bus Train Car Walk Cycle Number of people 6 15 12 3 4

Solution:

Total sum of all data = 40

Central angle of  bus = `[(6)/(40)]*360 = 54`

Central angle of  train = `[15/40]*360 = 135`

Central angle of car  =  `[(12)/(40)]*360 = 108`

Central angle of walk =  `[3/40]*360 = 27`

Central angle of cycle  =  `[4/40]*360 = 36`
