Introduction to dependent variable for math:

Dependent variable is a variable which depends on one more variable. Ifthe value of the independent variable increases then the value of dependent variable may increases or decreases. The increase or decrease of a dependent variable belongs to direct variation or indirect variation. In direct variation the value of the dependent variable increases when the value of the independent variable increases and vice versa. In indirect variation the value of the dependent variable increases when the value of the independent variable decreases and vice versa.

## Example problem – Dependent variable for math:

Example 1 - Dependent variable for math:

Check whether the x variable dependent or not in the equation a = 3b-1

Solution:

The given equation is a = 3b – 1.

Now substitute different values for b and check the value of a for each value of b.

When b = 1 `=>` the value of a is 2.

When b = 2 `=>` the value of a is 5.

When b = 3 `=>` the value of a is 8.

When b = 4 `=>` the value of a is 11.

When b = 5 `=>` the value of a is 14.

If the value of b increases, then the value of a also increases.

So, a is a dependent variable.

## Some more example problems – Dependent variable for math:

Example 2 - Dependent variable for math:

Check whether the m variable dependent or not in the equation m = 6n-4

Solution:

The given equation is m = 6n-4

Now substitute different values for n and check the value of m for each value of n.

When n = 1 `=>` the value of m is 2.

When n = 2 `=>` the value of m is 8.

When n = 3 `=>` the value of m is 14.

When n = 4 `=>` the value of m is 20.

When n = 5 `=>` the value of m is 26.

If the value of n increases then the value of m also increases.

So, m is a dependent variable.

Example 3 - Dependent variable for math:

Check whether the p variable dependent or not in the equation p = 1/q

Solution:

The given equation is p = 1/q.

Now substitute different values for q and check the value of p for each value of q.

When q = 1 `=>` the value of p is 1.

When q = 2 `=>` the value of p is 0.5.

When q = 3 `=>` the value of p is 0.33.

When q = 4 `=>` the value of p is 0.25.

When q = 5 `=>` the value of p is 0.2.

If the value of q increases, then the value of p also decreases.

So, p is not a dependent variable.
